2010 Game-A-Day Review*
October 16, 2010
UW-Whitewater at UW-Eau Claire

The UW-Whitewater Warhawks moved to 3-0 in WIAC play (6-0 overall) when they defeated the Eau Claire Blugolds 45-0 Saturday in Eau Claire. This team continues to be consistent and focused as the season moves forward. Saturday represented the first of back-to-back "same day travel" road trips as mandated by the WIAC. Trip One can be summarized in two words: Mission Accomplished. (The following aspects of the game will be rated Spectacular, Solid, or Needs Work)

THE RUNNING GAME
The Warhawks pounded out 237 yards, 18 first downs rushing, and 5.5 yards per carry behind a dominant performance by the offensive line. The forward push and holes created by the line made things easy for Levell Coppage (18 carries, 106 yds, 2 TD) and Antwan Anderson (10 carries, 77 yards, 1 TD). Michael Pirtle made his WIAC debut and gained 49 yards in 14 carries.
Rating: Spectacular

THE PASSING GAME
Matt Blanchard spread the ball around to 6 different receivers, led by Aaron Rusch's 9 catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. Rusch also completed a 10 yard TD pass to Jason Ford on a reverse that was wide open to jog into the end zone. Aaron decided to show off his arm and give Jason the opportunity for a TD. Matt Blanchard had his 6th consecutive start without an interception as he completed 18 of 26 passes for 170 yards and a TD. The offensive line held up strong in pass protection, not allowing a sack.
Rating: Solid

DEFENDING THE RUN
Leading rusher Joel Sweeney left with an injury after 3 carries. However, as well as the UW-W defensive line controlled the line of scrimmage, it's hard to imagine much changing even with Sweeney. UW-EC was held to 68 yards in 28 carries and 3 first downs rushing.
Rating: Spectacular

DEFENDING THE PASS
UW-W put good pressure on Blugold QB Austin Neu. Neu was limited to a paltry 3.9 yards per pass, completing 11 of 21 passes. The Warhawks intercepted two passes, including Matt McCulloch's 42 yard pick-six. Eau Claire gained only 150 yards through the air and picked up only 3 passing first downs.
Rating: Spectacular

SPECIAL TEAMS
Kicker Eric Kindler went 6-6 on PAT's and made his only FG attempt (37 yards). He also boomed his kickoffs an average of 66.1 yards. Kris Rosholt's 3 punts all went inside the 20. Two were fair caught on the 14 and the 7. The other was fielded at the 8 and returned to the 12. Rosholt's punting continues to be a powerful field position weapon for the Warhawks. The kickoff coverage unit was excellent allowing only 16.8 yards per return. UW-W averaged a healthy 25.0 yards on kickoff returns and 9 yards on punt returns.
RATING: Solid

EFFICIENCY
The Warhawks played a fourth straight game without a turnover. This is a team playing with striking fundamental precision right now. UW-W averaged 6.0 yards per play while accumulating 25 first downs. UW-W scored TD's on four of their first 5 possessions taking any suspense out of the game early. Whitewater had only 5 penalties, their lowest total since September 11th.
RATING: Spectacular

OVERALL
UW-W completely dominated a team that beat both St. John's and UW-Stevens Point. The difference in both the line play and at the skill positions was striking. UW-W played with a precision and dominance of a team headed for the post-season. If UW-W keeps playing this well, they will be hard to beat.
RATING: Spectacular

2010 Game-A-Day Review
October 9, 2010
UW-Stout at UW-Whitewater

The UW-Whitewater Warhawks returned home for the first time in nearly a month and what a reception they received!  A WIAC and school record 12,189 attended the 3:00 PM Family Day contest.  Many arrived early as the Perkins' Stadium parking lot was filled with tailgaters several hours before the game.  The Warhawks entered the game 4-0 and 1-0 in the WIAC.  UW-Stout came in 3-1, 1-0 in the WIAC.

Stout came into the season projected by many to finish in the top three in the WIAC.  Stout's strength is a very strong defense.  Warhawks' coach Lance Leipold indicated as much the week of the game when he said, "Up front they're big, their second-level people run well and they do a great job of mixing up their fronts".

Stout started strong on their first possession.  On their opening drive, the Blue Devils drove from their own 27 to the UW-W 5 using a balanced offense to work it's way down the field.  However, The Wahawks stiffened after Stout had a first and goal on the Warhawk 5 yard line.  The Blue Devils had to settle for a 25 yard field goal attempt.  However, Stout missed their opportunity to strike first when freshman Richard Marteny missed from 25 yards out.  Neither team scored in their next possessions and the first  quarter ended scoreless.  However, Kris Rosholt pinned the Blue Devils back on their own 1 with a 50 yard punt.  When the UW-W defense held Stout without a first down, the Warhawks took over at the Stout 49 after a punt.

Giving UW-W a short field is a recipe for disaster and the Warhawks made the Blue Devils pay.  Whitewater overcame two holding penalties, with a key 2nd and 17 Matt Blanchard to Adam Brandes 17 yard pass play to Stout's 16.  Two plays later Blanchard and Brandes hooked up for 11 to the Stout 4.  On 3rd and goal from the 2, Banchard hit Aaron Rusch for the TD and Whitewater grabbed a 7-0 lead.  However, the Blue Devils showed their mettle as they drove 69 yards in 15 plays on their next possession to tie the score at 7.  But the Warhawks were determined to regain the lead before halftime.  They started with 2:25 on the clock from their own 20.  Matt Blanchard threw 10 consecutive passes, completing 8 and moving UW-W to the Stout 10.  However, from there, the Blue Devils stiffened and the Warhawks settled for a 22 yard Eric Kindler field goal and a 10-7 lead with 7 seconds remaining in the half.

On their first possession of the third quarter, the Warhawks drove 80 yards, capped by a 24 yard TD pass from Blanchard to Rusch.  The score remained at 16-7 when the extra point failed.  The Warhawk defense held the Blue Devils to one first down in two second half possessions as the 3rd quarter ended 16-7.  Less than 2 minutes into the fourth quarter, Levell Coppage broke free to a 31 yard TD run. The conversion put UW-W's lead at 23-7.  On Stout's next possession a combined sack by Louissaint Minett and Max Ford and another by Tyler Huber led to the Warhawks holding the Devils on downs at the Stout 40.  Four Levell Coppage runs later, the Warhawks were in the end zone again, the TD from 4 yards out, and the Warhawks sealed the 30-7 victory.

On the day, the Warhawks out-gained the Blue Devils 468 to 238.  The Warhawks averaged 6.7 yards per play, while holding Stout to 3.7 yards per play.  Punter Kris Rosholt made the most of his opportunities as his two punts of 50 and 51 yards were both downed at the 1 yard line.

UW-Stout finished in 3rd place in the WIAC with a 4-3 record.  The Blue Devils finished 6-4 overall.  Their bid for second place was thwarted when they suffered a home loss,  27-21,  to UW-Stevens Point. Their other conference loss was a 29-28 heartbreaker to UW-LaCrosse.

2010 Game-A-Day Review
September 30, 2010
UW-Whitewater at UW-Platteville

The UW-Whitewater Warhawks kicked off their 2010 WIAC season against the UW-Platteville Pioneers on a breezy 63ยบ Thursday evening at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium on the campus of UW-Platteville.  Both teams had a September 25th bye and the WIAC office agreed to the schools' request to change the game from Saturday, October 2nd.  Platteville put together a festive Family Night atmosphere for this rare Thursday night contest. The game was the 17th playing of the annual George Chryst Memorial Bowl, named after the late Pioneer coach. The Warhawks entered the night 3-0, while the Pioneers came in at 2-1.

Both teams started slowly and were held scoreless in their first two possessions.  However, Pioneer QB Nick Anderson and WR Joe Burkeland changed that as they hooked up on passes of 23 and 57 yards in a two play scoring drive for the Pioneers.  The UW-P lead was short lived as the Warhawks marched 82 yards over the next 5:42, capped by a seven yard Matt Blanchard TD run.

With the score tied 7-7, the Pioneers drove from their own 30 to the Warhawk 10 before stalling and settling for a FG and a 10-7 lead early in the 2nd quarter.  The optimistic Pioneer fans were soon to experience a real strong dose of reality.  UW-Whitewater took their first lead of the night on their next possession, an 80 yard TD drive culminated by a Blanchard to Adam Brandes 33 yard TD connection.  A few minutes later, Blanchard hooked up with Brandes again, again from 33 yards out and UW-W led 21-7, the eventual halftime score.

The second half was all Warhawks.  UW-W scored TD's on all four of their 3rd quarter possessions:

A Levell Coppage 8 yard run completed a 70 yard drive.

A Matt Blanchard to John Novak 16 yard TD pass finished a 24 yard scoring drive.  The Warhawks got the ball when Max Ford recovered a fumble forced by Jon Baldwin.

After a Steve McCollom interception, the Warhawks drove 63 yards to a 3 yard Levell Coppage TD run.

The Warhawks extended their lead to 49-10 with a 55 yard Booker Stanley TD run.

Whitewater took the 49-10 lead into the fourth quarter.  The Pioneers scored the final TD on a blocked punt.  UW-W rode the legs of Antwan Anderson to run out the clock in the fourth quarter.  Anderson had 15 carries for 61 yards in the fourth quarter.

Not surprisingly, the Warhawks dominated the final statistics.  Whitewater controlled the ball for over 40 minutes.  UW-W piled up 637 yards of total offense, while holding UW-P to (-12) yards rushing and 172 total yards.  Matt Blanchard completed 24 passes in 30 attempts for 337 yards and 3 TD's.  Levell Coppage led the Warhawks in rushing with 134 yards and 2 TD.  Booker Stanley added 96 yards and a TD and Antwan Anderson gained 61.

Following their opening night loss to UW-W, Platteville won 3 of their next 4 games.  However, season ending losses to Stout and Stevens Point left their final record at 3-4 in the WIAC and 5-5 overall.

2010 Game-A-Day Review
September 18, 2010
Wisconsin-Whitewater at Campbellsville University

The 2-0 Warhawks traveled to Campbellsville, KY to face the Campbellsville University Tigers.  Campbellsville is an NAIA school who plays in the Mid-South Conference. The Tigers entered the contest with a 2-1 record after suffering their first loss of the season, a 33-21 decision to Cumberland University.  On his radio show, Warhawk Coach Lance Leipold said the week of the game, "Having watched film of Campbellsville, they are, by far, the most athletic of the three teams that we play and the biggest lines we will have gone up against so far this season.  Their nemesis so far has been turning the ball over.” The warm weather of the Bluegrass state welcomed UW-W as the temperature at kickoff was 85ยบ.

The Warhawks' offense started fast as they scored touchdowns on drives of 75, 67, and 80 yards on their first three possessions.  The Hawk offensive line were dominant in the drives as Levell Coppage rushed 11 times for 119 yards and 2 TD's in those first three possessions. Matt Blanchard added a 13 yard TD pass to Aaron Rusch on the Warhawks' first possession.  Campbellsville put together an 80 yard scoring drive, capped by a 40 yard TD pass from Robert Hill to Stan Warrenhuffman to cut the Warhawk lead to 21-7 at the half.

After a short punt set up the Warhawks at the CU 43, UW-W scored on a 5 yard Blanchard to Bernie Tamsett TD pass to give UW-W a commanding 28-7 lead.  In the fourth quarter, UW-W increased their lead to 30-7 when Campbellsville QB Robert Hill was penalized for intentional grounding in his own end zone. Antwan Anderson provided the final margin with a one yard touchdown run with 6:27 left in the game.

It was a dominating performance for the Warhawk offensive line and their rushing attack.  Whitewater gained 357 yards rushing on 53 attempts for a 6.7 yard per carry average.  Matt Blanchard finished 14-26 for 174 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Booker Stanley, Levell Coppage, and Antwan Anderson each topped the 100 yard mark for the second consecutive game gaining 116, 114, and 104 yards respectively.

The Warhawk defense again turned in another strong performance, holding the Tigers to 231 yards and 12 first downs.  The UW-W defense held the Tigers without a single first down on 7 of their 13 possessions.

Campbellsville University went on to finish in second place in the Mid-South East Division, with a 5-1 conference record.  The Tigers finished their 2010 season 7-5 overall.
